Haiti is still a priority for Project HOPE!
The work to rebuild Haiti is just beginning! President Rene Preval of Haiti indicated that it will take three years to remove the rubble left behind by the earthquake. He estimates that this will require 1,000 trucks moving debris for 1,000 days. He also said that he and most of the Haitians continue sleep outside due to the fear of aftershocks. However, the challenges are only getting worse as the rainy season in Haiti is due to start in April and with the large number of homeless due to the earthquake, health officials are concerned about the increased risk of malaria and dengue fever outbreaks.
Project HOPE medical volunteers have been working onboard the USNS Comfort since it arrived in Port au Prince in January. The teams on board the Comfort have started to see a decrease in the number of trauma cases and surgeries, but they are beginning to see an increase in patients with acute respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases. Obstetrical care is also increasing. As the number of critically injured patients decreases onboard the Comfort, Project HOPE volunteers begin to work with the land-based facilities in Port-au-Prince.
Currently, Project HOPE has shipped and distributed more than £24 million of medicines and medical supplies for use in hospitals and clinics in Haiti and in the border town of Jimani, Dominican Republic. In addition to the continued flow of relief supplies to Haiti from the UK and US, Project HOPE is coordinating direct shipments of much needed medicines and supplies from countries such as China, Dubai, India, Mexico and Vietnam.
On Sunday, February 21st, a HOPE assessment team consisting of HOPE staff, volunteer medical experts and corporate partners will arrive in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The following day, the team will leave on a week-long deployment to Haiti. The team will visit multiple hospitals and meet with health officials to explore the development of programs in the area of rehabilitation medicine, including training, volunteer support, orthotics/prosthetics, and facilities improvement.
As you can see, HOPE is committed to helping the people of Haiti for the long-term. Your continued support makes possible our relief efforts in Haiti, as well as our programs in 37 countries. Thank you for sharing and spreading the good word of Project HOPE!
