Ruth Madison, Project HOPE’s Health of Women and Children Technical advisor is working tirelessly to deploy HOPE volunteers. On 30-January, Ruth visited the Good Samaritan Hospital in the border town of Jimani, Dominican Republic to assess opportunities for HOPE volunteers and medical supplies. Ruth noted that as she arrived at the hospital, a U.S. Navy helicopter lifted off with its precious cargo of severely injured Haitians on their way to the USNS Comfort.
Upon entering the Good Samaritan Hospital, Ruth was caught up in the energy of several
international and NGO volunteers providing care to hundreds of injured Haitians who
had crossed the border seeking help from the medical staff and resources available
at Good Samaritan.
After talking with the hospital’s head of volunteer coordination – a volunteer herself – and learning that she had sufficient staff and medical supplies, Ruth went across the adjacent open field that separated the hospital from an orphanage.
The orphanage was still in operation, but it had also become a hospital to help the overflow from the neighbouring hospital. At the orphanage, it was clear that Project HOPE volunteers and medical supplies were needed and Ruth quickly assessed the needs and made arrangements for supplies and volunteers to start arriving in the next few days.
As Ruth was getting ready to leave, she saw hope for a new possibility as she watched a Dominican nurse with two Haitian toddlers giggling, laughing and having the time of their lives. Despite the differences the two countries have had over the years, it was heart warming to see the good of the people, putting aside their differences and helping one another!
